Professional bull riding returns to Lethbridge

Known as a heartland for rodeo and related sports, Lethbridge will play host to Professional Bull Riders for the second straight year this March.

The event, dubbed the South Country Co-Op Showdown, will be part of PBR’s Canadian Monster Energy Tour, featuring top riders both nationally and internationally. Riders get three attempts to hold onto a powerful bull for at least eight seconds.

Last year, Saskatchewan’s Jared Parsonage was the only rider to go 3 for 3, winning the event and shooting to the top of the national rankings. Of course, the bulls are also competing, with awards given for outstanding pugnacity. The top bulls have colourful names like Finning Lil Shorty, Shower NA Shave, and Kubota’s Big Orange Tractor.

Those that do well on the Monster Energy Tour earn points towards PBR’s elite Unleash the Beast circuit. Last year, Parsonage’s Canadian success translated to a strong placement in the UTB finals in Las Vegas. Bull riding has become a global sport, with cowboys from Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and more competing internationally. Competitions of all sizes and levels of professionalism exist, often advertising through colourful poster printing and flyer printing. In Alberta, the sport is heavily associated with the Calgary Stampede, but PBR hopes to capitalize on fans enduring the long wait between summer Stampede seasons.

PBR’s South Country Co-Op Showdown will take place at the ENMAX Centre on March 6 and 7.
