New Lethbridge school gets name

The town of Lethbridge has announced that the new elementary school currently under construction in South Lethbridge will be named after former superintendent Robert Plaxton.

The name was chosen by the Lethbridge School Division Board after a consultation where the public submitted over 80 potential names.

Plaxton’s 18-year tenure, after a long career as a teacher, made him the district’s longest-serving superintendent. He oversaw the creation of Ecole Nicholas Sheran, credited as being crucial to the development of West Lethbridge, as well as Park Meadows in the north. After his career as superintendent ended in 1991, he served as executive director of the College of Alberta School Superintendents. A name can often be the first part of a school’s identity, emblazoned on letterheads and banner printing, and this choice suggests the values the school board wants to instill in its young students.

The new school will host up to 600 students from kindergarten to grade 5, and is designed with the environment in mind. The roof will be lined with photovoltaic solar panels, which will contribute to the school’s electricity, and help instruct students about sustainability. Construction for the school is on track, with the roof recently added and portable classrooms arrived to the 42,000 square foot campus.

The newly dubbed Dr. Robert Plaxton Elementary School is set to open its doors in the fall of 2021, and is located at 4510 Fairmont Gate South.
