New health program to ease chronic conditions

Coping with a chronic illness can often be very difficult, and a new program is set to make life a little bit easier for Lethbridge residents who deal with this issue on a day to day basis.

Alberta Health Services will offer a series of workshops, named “Better Choices, Better Heath”, that are aimed at those who are living with conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, fibromyalgia, heart disease, colitis, Crohn’s disease, chronic pain or any other long-term affliction.

The sessions will be led by either a trained AHS professionals in health care or by volunteers, many of who face this issue in their own life.

It was felt that since many of those who cope with these illnesses will face the same challenges, the program will educate the participants in general terms they can all use. They will learn different mechanisms that they can use in their day to day life. These range form handling pain, adapting to fatigue, taking medications properly, exercise, good nutrition, and also how to best communicate with their own health care team. A print company will be able to create an assortment of handouts and other materials that can be distributed to those who take part so they can take them home and refer to them when they need to

The sessions will take place in the Southview Meeting Room of the Nord-Bridge Senior’s Center starting at nine in the morning beginning on September 21st. Those interested in finding out more can call 403-388-6654.
