Lethbridges ATB Centre to host new YMCA branch

More details have been announced about the second phase of the development of the ATB Centre, a multi-purpose recreation centre.

The City of Lethbridge gave journalists a ‘sneak peak’ of the new area, which will be home to the Cor Van Raay YMCA, named after a major donor to the project. The YMCA will be home to four pools, thirty thousand square feet of gym space, and numerous courts and other areas dedicated to various activities.

The YMCA expects its membership to grow with the new facilities, and so plans to increase its staff to 225. Lethbridge residents with relevant skills would be wise to keep their Business Cards and resumés ready, as the organisation will be in need of both trainers and office staff for duties like schedule making and brochure printing. The organisation is currently located downtown at a smaller facility.

The first phase of the ATB Centre opened in 2016, featuring two full-sized hockey rinks and ten curling sheets. The rinks operate year-round and offer public clubs as well as rentals for private groups.

No opening date has been set yet for the opening of the second component, including the new YMCA, but journalists described it as nearing completion. Mayor Chris Spearman has expressed hope that the new recreation centre will act as a community hub, and draw people to west Lethbridge.
