Lethbridge takes part in global Autism day

Lethbridge recently marked the celebration of World Autism Awareness Day.

April 2nd has been designated by the United Nations as a day to raise awareness and bring attention to autism around the world, and the challenges that people living with the disorder can face.

In Lethbridge, the Chinook Autism Society banded together to help provide information to residents about this issue. They gathered in community parks and handed out packages to the kids that included sidewalk chalk and bubbles, along with fact sheets that gave more information about autism. Items like these can be produced by a printing company.

The goal of the event was to act as a starting point in a discussion about autism spectrum disorders, and how they affect the people who live with them and their families.

According to Kareena Zanolli, who is the president of Chinook Autism Society that organized the event, many times activities that surround autism are designed to act as fundraisers, but this was intended to be different. It was about opening a dialogue and giving people a chance to get to know individuals living with autism, as well as their families.

Social media also played a role in raising awareness. Those who attended the celebration in Lethbridge’s Henderson Park were also invited to share photos of their kids playing with the bubbles and chalk with the Chinook Autism Society.
