Lethbridge Scottish dancers to mark anniversary

The Lethbridge Scottish Country Dance Club (SCD) will be marking a pair of milestones this year, as it celebrates both its 40th anniversary and its 25th annual edition of its Workshop and Ball event.

The Ball is a weekend-long celebration of traditional Scottish dance designed to help dancers develop their skills and meet like-minded performers and musicians. It will include instructors and musicians from across North America. There will be a ceilidh dance program including traditional numbers such as “Shiftin’ Bobbins” and “Ian Powrie’s Farewell to Auchterarder”, with music provided by Lethbridge’s own The Spurtles. Following a banquet, the main ball dance will resume, with Scottish dances including “Flowers of Edinburgh”, “The Montgomerie’s Rant” and “From the Broomielaw.”

The event is dubbed “Milestones” as it also marks four decades of the Lethbridge SCD’s existence. In addition to holding the annual workshop and ball, it also holds weekly classes for dancers of all levels within the Leduc area. Scottish country dancing is typically a group dance involving three or four couples, and is distinct from the well-known solo Highland dancing tradition.

Organizations such as this help to preserve traditional cultures and often promote themselves through a variety of methods, including social media videos, banner printing and live performances at cultural festivals.

The 2023 Milestones Workshop and Ball will take place between March 31 and April 2 at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge Hotel.
