Lethbridge program aims to train unemployed

A new provincial program looking to address unemployment will launch soon in Lethbridge. The program aims to provide people with useable skills through training in the under-recognized skills of supply chain management.

The program will consist of a 15-week seminar at no cost to eligible participants, during which they can maintain employment insurance benefits. Those who complete the program will gain a unique. nationally certified Micro-Credential in supply chain management and logistics. The topic deals with the distribution of goods and services between different areas, whether for use in industry or delivery to consumers. It is said to be one of the fastest-growing sectors in southern Alberta.

Courses in the program include subjects like Logistics, Transportation, Purchasing and Risk Management. Participants will also learn how to market themselves through skills like résumé and cover letter writing, business card printing, and interviewing. The course is a joint project of Teamworks Career Centre (part of the Alberta Ministry of Labour) and the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation. Similar programs, whether offering general or specific skill training to the unemployed, are available and often advertise through the internet, as well as print media like brochure printing.

The supply management course began its first session yesterday, September 30. The next two sessions are set to start on January 27 and March 30.
