Last weekend saw the 12th annual ATB Financial Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat Festival entertain revellers. As in past years, a great time was had by all who participated.
The Calgary Dragon Boat Club ‘Crew Yahoo’ took first place in the A division, with second and third place showings by teams from Regina and fourth place going to a team from Edmonton. The Women’s challenge was won by the YWCA’s ‘Wise Women’s’ team, while ‘Dragon R’ Butz’ took the title spot in the top four local crews race.
The event was held on Lethbridge’s Henderson Lake, and more than 1,600 participants enjoyed a weekend of both competition and camaraderie. Both the A and B teams put on a great show, and crowds of cheering fans turned out for the popular summer races. Many of the boats were decorated with Signs produced by banner printing companies.
The weekend was injury free, and only a few participants went for an unexpected swim in the lake when one boat capsized. A steerperson was also accidentally knocked off his post when it was hit by the wake from another boat.
While Saturday night’s thunder and hailstorm resulted in the temporary closing of the beer garden, it was open for business again on Sunday. Funds raised during the weekend’s events will be used to hold next year’s races, with the remainder going to help sponsor Rotary projects throughout the world.
