Lethbridge council commits to helping the environment

Lethbridge City Council has adopted a new Waste Diversion Policy that it hopes will reduce the amount of garbage that it produces each year.

The plan calls for a five year target that will see the per capita amount of waste produced lowered by 30 percent by 2021, and a 15 year goal of 50 percent by the year 2030. This translates into a reduction of 795 kg and 600 kg per year respectively.

The mayor noted that the council feels that by setting tangible targets, it is starting the process of meeting a goal it has set to reduce the city’s impact on the surrounding environment. Cutting back on the solid waste it produces annually puts it one step closer to doing so.

Part of this initiative will involve increasing the amount of items that are recycled, as this will divert a lot of waste form the landfill. This will apply not only to households, but also industry, commercial establishments and the construction sectors as well. Brochure printers will be able to create a variety of materials that let the public know more about these initiatives and how they will affect them. These can be combined with online and other promotional methods to effectively reach as many people as possible.

The Council’s environment Committee developed this new framework earlier this year on behalf of the council as a whole.
