Lethbridge College to host drive-in movie night

The Lethbridge College Alumni Engagement organization, in conjunction with Fresh Air Cinema, will be putting together a movie night this month to welcome people back to campus in a different way.

The event, called Movie on the Coulees, will feature the 1985 family-friendly standard The Goonies. The screening will replace the annual Coulee Fest which typically takes place at the start of the academic year. Two parking lots will be dedicated to the screening, allowing for up to 250 vehicles. Film audio will be broadcast to car radios over the FM spectrum. Tickets were offered for free, with alumni given the ability to reserve one first, and the event quickly sold out.

For older alumni, the screening might bring back memories of the Green Acres Drive-In Theatre, which operated less than a kilometre from Lethbridge College from 1950 to 1986. Drive-in film screenings, due to COVID-19 restrictions, have exploded in popularity this summer, frequently aided by banner printing and other advertising methods. These screenings often take place in unusual or makeshift “theatres”, and feature both classic flicks and more recent releases. Movie on the Coulees was announced as a one-time event, but its success could lead to future drive-ins in the Lethbridge area.

Movie on the Coulees will take place after dark on September 26 on the Lethbridge College campus.
