Dragon Boat Festival to row back into Lethbridge

The Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat Festival, one of the biggest such festivals in Western Canada, will return to the city’s rivers this summer.

The festival is based on the East Asian tradition that sees teams competing to row long and elaborately decorated boats. The festival will include a number of different categories, including the 10-person Naut Dragon category, a Recreation category, and the Competitive event with different race lengths and both mixed and women’s races.

There will also be a special challenge cup competition for female cancer survivors. Each boat is equipped with a drummer at the back who helps to guide the crew and decide on race tactics. Past events have drawn hundreds of racers and thousands of festival attendees.

The races will be surrounded by a weekend-long festival, including musical performances on the opening night by Dusty Dee Litchfield, the Chinook High School Band and The Chevelles. There will also be a dedicated KidZone with live entertainment and activities aimed at children. Many teams will be representing employers and other organizations. Festivals such as these typically also include a number of food, drink and merchandise vendors, using colourful sign and banner printing to attract festival-goers.

The 2022 edition of the Lethbridge Rotary Dragon Boat Festival will take place between June 24 and 26 at Henderson Park.
