Youth ringette tournament returning to Leduc

Leduc will be again hosting the prestigious Wood Tournament this winter, bringing together top youth ringette players from across the province.

The event, the 49th annual tournament, will feature girls competing in the under-14, under-16, and under-19 divisions, playing in multiple crosses across the weekend before crowning a champion. The weekend will also feature action from the National Ringette League, featuring the top senior players in the country, with eight games held across the weekend.

The local Edmonton WAM! will be in action against the Calgary Rath and BC Thunder, with games broadcast online as well as through Telus Optik Channel 1999. Similar to ice hockey, the Canadian-born ringette features teams trying to put a rubber ring into the opposing net, with rule changes aimed at making the game more exciting.

The Wood Tournament will also feature a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction, with proceeds going towards the Edmonton Ringette Club, helping it support future tournaments and youth classes and league throughout the season. Past auction items have included memorabilia from local teams like the Oilers and Oil Kings. Events like this often rely on volunteer efforts as well as the support of local businesses like Print shops and radio stations for promotions.

The 2024 Wood Tournament will take place from November 29 to December 1 at the Leduc Recreation Centre.
