The Canadian Print industry seems to be still going strong, as Transcontinental Inc the country's largest magazine printer, made a move to acquire Canadian assets of US company Quad Graphics, including its seven print facilities. The six printing plants include facilities in Ontario, namely Aurora, Concord and Markham, as well as facilities in Lasalle, Quebec to service the province‘s printing needs. The printing facility acquired also included one in Nova Scotia, and one Edmonton Alberta, which can also provide printing services to surrounding areas like Leduc. The acquisition also included one premedia facility.

These operations are estimated to employ over 1,500 and will generate $310 million US in revenue, according to the company. In its deal with Quad Graphics, Transcontinental sold its Mexican assets to the company, which also included a Canadian black and white book printing business. US operations in Mexico employ about 900 people and also generate $70 million US of revenue per year.

The switch of assets should allow Quad Graphics to becoming a leading print producer of magazines, retail inserts as well as Catalogues in Mexico. Transcontinental on the other hand, realizes that print markets have suffered due to technological enhancements, overcapacity, competitive pressure and digital platforms, and so they have resolved to develop a firmer business plan to deal with printing market challenges.
