The group features a mixture of Indigenous and Western musical styles, with performers gathered from across Canada’s three territories and British Columbia. Performers include throat singer and drum dancer Sylvia Cloutier, spoken word artist and bassist Pat Braden, and singer and trombonist Selena Savage. Their music combines styles such as jazz, folk, rock, and spoken word poetry. Singer/songwriter Diyet emphasizes in promotional material how the group aims to represent the diversity of Northern Canada:
“As we’ve performed across Canada from Koerner Hall in Toronto ON to the Lougheed Centre in Camrose AB, the universal feeling from audience is that we’ve brought the North alive for them.”
The performance is part of the MacLab Centre’s Special Events program, which aims to bring unique performers to Leduc outside of the Centre’s usual series. Concerts like this often use methods such as flyer printing and local radio promotion to help attract curious music lovers and expose them to something new. This concert is also part of a coast-to-coast tour for New North Collective under the “Circumpolar Soundscape” banner, which will also include a stop in Spruce Grove, Alberta the following day.
The New North Collective will perform in Leduc at the MacLab Centre for the Performing Arts on the evening of February 1, 2025.
