New fire safety program for Leduc children

Schools in Leduc are working with local fire services to implement a new fire safety program for children in the area.

Starting this fall, during the 2013/2014 school year, the city will be investing funds into the the ‘Play Safe! Be Safe!’ program for the area’s elementary school pupils.

Packages will be created containing activities, games, and information focused on teaching fire safety skills. Print companies will no doubt participate in the production of the packages, which will then be distributed to schools.

Four primary concepts will be reinforced through the packages. Pupils will learn to: find a firefighter; stop, drop, and roll; stay low and crawl beneath smoke; and to tell an adult.

Kindergarten classes will be visited by local firefighters who will teach the children about these key elements in further detail. Students will have the chance to ask the firefighters questions, explore their gear, and get up close to the fire truck.

According to a fire statistics research report released on the Government of Alberta’s website, incidents of children playing with fire were responsible for four deaths and 114 injuries in the province between the 2000 and 2009.

Leduc Fire Chief Ernie Polsom says the department is looking to take an effective and proactive approach to decrease injuries caused by fires. He believes that the program and its packages will provide teachers with a great resource to work into the curriculum.
