New aquatic program for Leduc high school students

Kids from a high school in Leduc who love to spend time in the water will soon have an opportunity to turn their hobby into something more.

In a pilot project, local high schools are partnering with the city to offer an aquatic leadership skills program for students 15 years of age and older.

The courses will take one year and combine online and classroom learning with in-the-pool instruction and experience. Participants will learn first aid, water safety, and life guarding, as well as how to deal with the public.

A Print company can produce the printed materials that will be distributed to the students who take part.

All of this combines to provide experience that may be valuable to them in their future chosen careers.

The students must have a Swim Kids Level 8+ or an equivalent to participate. They will receive 14 credits towards their graduation total, and can even go on to earn more through work experience once they have completed the program.

When they are fully qualified and working, they may be paid as much as $18 per hour, which will really help when it comes to paying for their future higher education. They will also be able to go on and train for higher levels of certification.

There is a cost attached to the program. Families that have trouble financially may qualify for assistance through the Canadian Tire Jump Start program.
