Leduc will still be one of the hosts for the next Slo-Pitch National Championship, but fans and players will have to wait a little longer to take to the diamond.
The Alberta city will host simultaneous tournaments in the Mens C, Mens E, Mens 35, Womens B and Womens D divisions, with teams qualifying from across Canada. Other tournaments will be held in Kelowna, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Brampton. Teams are divided by age, gender and skill. The tournament will consist of a four game round robin, followed by a modified double elimination bracket, meaning that each team is guaranteed five games.
Slow-pitch is a variant of softball where the pitch is thrown overhand to rise above the batter’s head, making it easier to hit the ball than fast-pitch or traditional baseball. This makes it a popular hobby for people looking to stay fit. The tournament is organized by SPN, which promotes Slo-Pitch leagues and tournaments throughout the country, leading up to provincial and then the national championship tournaments. Amateur sporting events like these often run on community effort, such as using local restaurants for refreshments or Print shops for championship banner printing.
The Slo-Pitch National Championship was originally scheduled for this summer, but the Leduc events will now take place on the weekend from July 29 to August 2, 2021.
