Leduc updates public in its efforts to go green

The city of Leduc has put in a lot of effort in order to make itself more “green” and it recently released a report to let the public know how

it has been doing.

Kerra Chomlak, who is the city’s environmental sustainability coordinator, noted that in 2012, the council had given the go ahead for setting up targets for water conservation and waste diversion. She noted that these goals were based on the input from consultants and other experts in the field, as well as what other communities of a similar size had been able to do. A reduction of 65 percent was determined to be a reasonable number, and this was the goal that was set

Ms. Chomlak reported that , so far, water usage has been reduced to 184 liters per person, with the goal being that in fall to 175 liters by 2020. To help the public learn more about what they can do in their own lives to help the environment, Calendars can be prepared that include information and helpful hints. These can then be recycled at the end of the year.

The city has also been making strides in other areas. It plants trees every year, and in 2014 alone, 960 seedlings or saplings were put in the ground. As well, bird counts have been conducted on a bi-annual basis to monitor their levels and determine how well their populations are doing.
