Leduc transit booms under new model

A recently released study shows that Leduc Transit ridership has more than doubled since the launch of its On-Demand Transit service in 2021.

The report, by service provider RideCo, surveyed the first year of ridership under Leduc’s on-demand service. The service replaced four fixed bus routes with 450 virtual “flex stops” throughout Leduc and Nisku on request through a mobile app. The goal was to service the entirety of Leduc while making it easier for people to take direct transit to hubs such as Nisku Business Park and the Edmonton International Airport. New programs such as this often see providers trying to notify and win over service users through tools such as websites and brochure printing, and so far, RideCo claims it has found success.

RideCo says it has increased ridership by 252% between September 2021 and October 2022, in comparison with the previous year. The service also cut travel headway by half, and reduced the cost per passenger by 47%. The project was a collaboration between the City of Leduc and Leduc County, with Leduc County Mayor Tanni Doblanko praising the shift in a statement:

“Through our partnership with the City of Leduc, Leduc Transit’s on-demand solution has done this in a way that not only increased coverage and frequency of service within the park, but also reduced our operating costs – saving taxpayers’ money.”

The on-demand transit program is slated to continue into 2023.
