The City of Leduc will be taking applications for a new program designed to help its residents better connect with the natural world.

The Hens and Bees program will provide up to 10 local households with the chance to raise hens or bees in their backyards. The program will include education and licensing on how to keep and care for the animals and produce eggs or honey. The goal is to increase biodiversity in the city and contribute to residents’ overall wellbeing. The application process will involve consultation with neighbours and community members.

The pilot program was originally set to launch in 2020, but it was delayed to make sure it could take place safely in light of social distancing requirements. This could involve virtual conferencing being used in the application process and community engagement.

Hens and Bees is planned to run as a pilot for two years, after which time the city will review the results and community feedback to decide on implementing a permanent program. Pilot programs like this can often be forerunners of permanent initiatives, with cities using tools like brochure printing and online outreach to target a wide range of the local population.

Applications for Leduc’s Hens and Bees pilot program are now open and will be available up until February 15 on the city’s website.
