Leduc students show support for disabled people

Students at Leduc’s East Elementary School were recently given an opportunity to learn more about Down syndrome.

Angie Charpentier, a mother to a son with this condition, gave a talk to the children. She told them about the causes of the syndrome, and also gave information about its effects. She likewise answered questions form the pupils, and let them know about the challenges that someone living with it may face.

According to Charpentier, one of the most important messages for the kids to take away with them was that someone with Down syndrome is just like them, in that they have their own favorite things and that they have feelings just like everyone else.

They can also do many things for themselves, though it may take them a little bit longer to do so. Stationery printers can help to further raise awareness by creating Brochures and informational activity sheets that give information to the kids, in terms they can understand.

The presentation was given to help mark World Down Syndrome Day, which is celebrated by countries around the world on March 21st.

Along with the this, the staff and students at the school showed their support by wearing colored socks, which is an internationally recognized symbol of awareness for the syndrome and also of support and solidarity for those living with it.
