What's Happening in Leduc, AB…

At a Peavey Mart store in Leduc, customers were recently offered a chance to shore up their poultry flocks, while at the same time helping to support a program that seeks to ensure that stocks heritage breeds are maintained.

The chick sale was part of a program at the University of Alberta.

Its purpose is to maintain stocks of the breeds of chicken that were the building blocks of today’s commercial varieties. This poultry is not specifically bred for either egg or meat production, and should disease or some other disaster wipe out current types, they would serve as the breeding birds to help rebuild stock levels.

While it is not legal to own chickens within the city limits, rural farmers both large and small were able to purchase the chicks.

The university currently maintains a flock of around 1,300 of these birds, and the chick sale was part of its efforts to be financially self-sustaining. People can also take part in the Adopt A Chicken program, where they sponsor a bird and, in turn, receive regular deliveries of fresh eggs.

These heritage variety chicks were only offered at the Peavey Mart’s Leduc and Spruce Grove locations.
