Leduc shines in Communities in Bloom competition

The city of Leduc was recently granted a prestigious award for its efforts to keep itself green and beautiful.

The area was given a rating of five silver blooms in this year’s Communities in Bloom (CiB) nationwide competition. It competed in the Class of Champions (large) grouping, which also included cities such as Wood Buffalo in Alberta, Westmount in Quebec and Charlottetown in PEI.

Judges came to the community to score its efforts. The areas it was judged in included green space, civic involvement, floral displays, urban forestry, environmental action and heritage conservation. According to local CiB Chair Brad Symes, though the city narrowly missed out on being awarded a rating of gold bloom, he and the rest of the committee were very impressed with its efforts.

Mr. Symes, who is from Leduc, remarked that the judges of the competition were impressed with the level of involvement of city residents in keeping their community beautiful and addressing its environmental concerns. A calendar printing company can use photos of the city’s gardens to create Calendars that can raise awareness about the CiB program. These can be distributed to the city residents to let them know more about it and also what they can do to help.

The Leduc CiB committee is currently considering what their plan is for next year, and they are interested in having new members who can bring fresh and innovative ideas to share. Anyone who would like to take part is invited to call 780-980-7177.
