Leduc residents get fit in local program prescribed by doctors

14 Leduc residents are getting fit and having fun as part of the Prescription to Get Active program. Since fitness is just what the doctor ordered, more and more will be able to take part in the local fitness program partnership endorsed by the Leduc Beaumont Devon Primary Care Network and 50 local physicians.

Participants are able to register through doctor prescriptions to the fitness program, which helps Leduc residents get the recommended 150 minutes per week of physical exercise. The doctor issued prescriptions provide patients with a complimentary one month pass to the Leduc Recreation Centre and Aquafit centre.

Program officials of the Prescription to Get Program are pleased to announce that it is the only one of its kind in the province. The program has been helping to advertise both the benefits of exercise and the local fitness programs of the recreation centre. Poster printings and Brochures have been instrumental in helping to make the program a success.

The program is so popular that it was scheduled to finish by the summer but now has an open ended completion date,
with more and more people expected to take part in 2012.

A research team has already taken the program a step further by initiating a research project examining the effectiveness of the program in reducing the number of medical prescriptions given by physicians. Proponents of the program purport savings on the medical side, with enrolled patients making fewer visits to the doctor as a result of maintaining an improved fitness level.
