LeDuc residents asked to be safe on ice

Winter temperatures have arrived in LeDuc, and with this comes skaters looking for a place to enjoy some outdoor time out on the ice. The city is requesting

that they keep safety in mind and take care in choosing a place to enjoy this winter activity.

The city asked people to make use of the13 different skating areas that are open to the public. These are maintained, and the ice is thick enough to be safe to venture out on. Each is available for either hockey or casual skating for all ages.

The public is also being reminded that they should not venture out onto storm water ponds, as the surface may not be stable enough to support them. There are several factors that come into play to create this situation. Water levels can fluctuate which can keep them from freezing evenly; this causes air pockets to form, and there may be depths that make it unsafe.

A bylaw has been enacted to address this issue, and Signs have been posted that warn people away from these ponds. Anyone found on them will be asked to leave.

The exception to this is the pond at the civic centre (Alexandra Park). Due to a variety of factors, this body of water is safe, and it is maintained so that it can be used for hockey and other winter sports.
