The city of Leduc is looking into a pilot program that would provide e-scooters for public rental on city streets, and it is looking for citizen feedback.
The proposal was brought before the City Council this November, and it voted on a period of public consultation. If approved, the pilot program would launch in spring 2022 and last two years. Scooters would be supplied by Bird Canada at no cost to the city and would be available to rent from stations throughout Leduc. The arrangement is similar to the one Bird Canada has made with other Alberta municipalities, like Okotoks and Red Deer. The program would be evaluated after two years to decide if it should be made permanent.
In addition to an open house event, the city is gathering feedback through an online survey. The survey provides additional information in addition to a simple yes-or-no question. Surveys like this, often done through Print services as well as electronic methods, have become a common method for municipal governments to get feedback from citizens.
The final approval for the pilot program would still be up to a vote by Leduc City Council. If the pilot is approved, the city would be able to set factors such as maximum speed, parking areas, rules around pathways and more.
The city of Leduc’s survey on e-scooters is now online on the city website, and it will be open to January 10.
