The Leduc municipal government has launched a new initiative to help recognize ordinary acts of kindness in the community.

The project, called Kindness Counts, began with a call for video submissions nominating residents for acts of generosity. The focus of the project is on acts that occurred within the city of Leduc in the year of 2020 and were not related to the nominee’s regular job. The acts should have helped to make others feel welcome, provided help to people at risk or helped to lift spirits during a difficult year.

The top submissions will be used to create a special video thanking helpful and kind citizens. The video will be showcased as part of the virtual Citizens of Distinction Award Ceremony during National Volunteer Week. Events like this, often promoted through tools like poster printing or social media, can help to connect communities and recognize often underappreciated efforts.

The Citizens of Distinction Ceremony typically takes place at a Volunteer Appreciation Banquet, and it features specific honours like the Athletic Achievement Award and the Arts, Culture and Heritage Recognition Award, but this year’s ceremony will take place through a virtual stream and will include the 2019 award winners, as well as the Kindness Counts honourees.

The virtual Citizens of Distinction Award Ceremony will be held on the evening of April 23.
