The city of Leduc will be running its biannual bird-counting contest this December, with the goal of encouraging residents to learn more about their natural world.
The contest, called the Christmas Bird Count, requires participants to look for birds in Leduc, Beaumont or Kavanaugh for at least 30 minutes on a scheduled date. They must then complete a tally sheet and send it to the city for a chance to win a prize. The sheet contains over two dozen birds that are native to the Foothills region, including the American tree sparrow, great horned owl, white-breasted nuthatch and the Canada goose.
Participants also record the time spent and distance travelled during their journey. All sheets will be entered into a draw for a bird feeder and pack of seed.
The city will also be offering a free winter bird guide to help birdwatchers identify each species. Guides like this, often created through booklet or brochure printing, are used by birders, hikers and other nature lovers to help better understand the world around them. The bird population in Leduc changes considerably through the seasons, so there are bird-watching contests in both the winter and spring.
The Leduc Christmas Bird Count is scheduled to take place on December 19, with participants able to submit Forms through e-mail and physical mail until January 5.
