The Leduc Hub has announced that it will be opening up a temporary shelter for homeless and transitory people in the upcoming winter.
The program, the first of its kind in Leduc, will consist of 12 beds available nightly from November to March. The program will use volunteer efforts for intake and food, and has contracted an Edmonton security company for additional assistance. The Hub will be looking for community support in the form of volunteer efforts and donations of food and money, including a fundraiser that will be held shortly before the shelter’s opening. Charitable organizations often use tools like brochure printing and special events to attract this support and let the community know what they are doing.
The new shelter will join the Hub’s already-existing programs in the Leduc area, including food and winter clothing donation drives and access to job and skill training. The organization is a registered charity that is supported by community donations. Created in 2008 as the Leduc & District Emergency Shelter Association, the organization changed its name to the Hub in 2018 to reflect the range of services it provides. The group was recently recognized by Volunteer Leduc for their contributions.
The Leduc Hub plans to have the shelter available on November 1. A fundraiser will be held to support it at the Leduc Recreation Centre on the morning of October 26.
