As Leduc residents prepare for the upcoming cold and flu season, Alberta Health Services is promoting a new vaccine as part of its annual influenza immunization program during the winter season. This year, for the first time, Alberta Health Services is offering FluMist - a new nasal spray vaccine that protects against all three strains of influenza - H1N1, H3N2 like virus, and influenza B. The immunizations began on October 15 and will continue throughout the rest of the fall and beginning of winter.

FluMist will be marketed as a good and suitable alternative for people who are afraid of needles, as well as higher-risk patients and those over the age of 2 and under the age of 59. The mist will work by introducing the virus into the nasal passage, which will then stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against the virus. The virus cannot travel into the lungs and cause disease. The free vaccination and influenza immunization is offered free to every Leduc resident and every Albertan over six months of age.

With as many as 4,000 influenza deaths and over 20,000 hospitalizations in Canada per year, there will doubtlessly be many poster printing advertised in public venues in and around Leduc throughout the flu season.
