This year’s relatively mild winter weather has resulted in the city of Leduc closing its outdoor ice surfaces.

According to the city’s Manager of Parks and Open Spaces, Todd Wilson, though the temperature may be below freezing, they are not low enough to keep the ice solid when the bright sun shines on them each day. The ice becomes soft and can no longer be used for skating or other activities. The rinks were already closed in January during the stretch of unseasonably warm weather that occurred during that month.

Wilson noted that it is not unusual for the outdoor skating areas to be closed this early in the season. In many years, they are shut down after the Family Day weekend in February. He also pointed out that if there is a stretch of cold weather that lasts at least two weeks, then some of them, such as the Kinsmen and Lion’s rinks, may be reopened.

Notices were placed both online and at the facilities themselves to let the public know about the closures.
