Locals are invited to team up and build a hand-powered cart using whatever materials they have. Carts must be able to steer, carry two drivers and move without engines or external devices. There will be prizes not only for those who are able to finish fastest but also those who find creative solutions or have especially original designs or flashy costumes. The race is intended to be the first in a series of annual events.
Each participating team will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Community events like this often turn to Print shops to create souvenir clothing, trophies and other ways to keep the memory of the event going. The event grounds will also feature a licensed patio overlooking the race and food trucks from La Napolenta Pizza and My Sweet Escape.
Promotional material emphasizes the goal of promoting creativity:
“It’s not about speed, it’s about style! Grab your crew, build your wildest pushcart, and dress to impress. We’re handing out points for creativity, costumes, and crazy designs, not just crossing the finish line first. Think fun, not fast.”
The inaugural Wacky Races Push Cart Derby will take place on the afternoon of September 14 at Leduc Brewing Company.
