A charity that aims to provide essentials to the city’s homeless people will be holding its annual feast and giveaway, but it will be held a little later than planned to comply with ongoing gathering restrictions.
The organization, called Brooklyn’s Backpacks, delivers clothes and backpacks full of essential goods to people in need. Much of the contents are directly donated from people in Edmonton and surrounding cities, including Leduc. This year’s donations include new and used clothing, hand sanitizer and candy, as well as a $2,000 cash donation from the Kinette Club of Leduc. There is enough material for over 100 backpacks and to fill a large moving truck, with donations still open.
The charity was founded by Crystal Manuel and is named after her 8-year-old daughter Brooklyn, who became interested in helping the homeless two years ago. The giveaway is normally done through a large banquet around the December holiday season, but this year, the event was delayed to comply with ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
Charitable events like this often rely on contributions from local individuals and businesses, such as Print shops for advertising or restaurants for catering, and Brooklyn’s Backpacks has been no exception. Past efforts have included backpacks from The Breeze FM, toothbrushes and toothpaste from Corintha Dental and handmade toques from a woman in Nunavut.
The Brooklyn’s Backpacks event was originally scheduled for December 15, but is now set to take place in mid to late January.
