Print companies in Leduc, AB will be busy in the upcoming weeks showcasing two of its own backyard talents scheduled to win prestigious provincial awards at an important April 9 gala in St. Albert.
Creative non-fiction writer, novelist and poet Robert Kroetsch, native of Leduc, AB is set to receive the prestigious Lieutenant Governor Distinguished Arts Award of Alberta. Kroetsch has published Books of poetry, works of fiction as well as non-fiction. His poetry collection was released last year and received publicity from print companies in the Leduc, AB area. Kroestsch was the winner of the Governors General Award for Fiction in 1969 for The Studhorse Man and he was also appointed officer of the Order of Canada in 2004.
The other recipient of the same award is Jane Ash Poitras, a printmaker and mixed media painter from the province of Alberta. Poitras holds a degree in Fine Arts in printmaking from the University of Albeta and an MFA from Columbia University. Her work is often featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and has caught the attention of print companies interested in her work in Leduc, AB and other parts of the province.
The judges who chose the winners from among the 50 plus nominations included Peter Herdorff, president of the National Arts Centre, and Patricia Bovey, former curator of the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
