What's Happening in Leduc, AB…

The 2010 Municipal Census, released Jan 24, 2011, shows that the City of Leduc has grown by 38.5 per cent over the past four years; an average of 8.5 per cent a year. This figure is in startling contrast to the 1.5 per cent annual growth that Leduc has experienced over the previous 30 year period.

Comparatively speaking, this type of population growth is explosive, say city representatives.

City of Leduc manager, Paul Benedetto, says the municipality has grown more than other areas of Alberta, and what’s more, the 2010 Census has reaffirmed what residents have known for years; the city does not rely on Edmonton for a strong economy. The percentage of workers employed locally in manufacturing, retail and professional services such as catalog printing in Leduc is 66 per cent. Locally is defined as the Edmonton International Airport, Nisku and the City of Leduc. This figure remains consistent with figures going back to 1993.

According to Ken Woitt, director of planning with the city, the current expansion project underway at the airport along with growth in Leduc’s Business Park and in nearby Nisku, population and employment growth should remain elevated in the years to come. This prediction is backed up with increased activity in resale housing and with increased building permits in 2011.

The 2010 municipal census was conducted last May. It was the first time that a coalition of staff from the City of Leduc was organized from many civic departments to conduct and process the census in-house.
