What's Happening in Leduc, AB…

According to a 2012 report commissioned by the Capital Region Board, the population of Edmonton and the surrounding area is about to explode, possibly doubling by the middle of this century.

Within 35 years, the population is forecasted to be as high as 2.3 million people, including the City of Edmonton and nearby areas. The report was released by Stokes Economic Consulting Inc. and Strategic Projections Inc.

The current population count of Edmonton and satellite communities, which includes the Leduc area, is 1.2 million. The consultant’s study suggests figures range between 1.8 million to 2.3 million – numbers which are dependent on the rate of growth as determined by the future economy. These projections are higher than those in a report released three years ago when the Alberta economy experienced a downturn.

The demands created by this projected growth will impact all municipalities in the Capital Region. While an employment study will follow this report, which will offer some analysis in the ratio of baby boomers around to retire in relation to younger workers, initial figures are helpful for strategic planning by local businesses in regards to staffing or planning new locations and managing their own growth to keep pace with Capital Region populations.

This applies to the city of Leduc, currently with a population of just over 25,000 residents, which could possibly climb to nearly 50,000 people by 2047.
