Leduc leads the way with pair of initiatives

Leduc proved itself to be a city with a conscience this month, with a number of awareness events taking place.

At the start of the month, The Leduc Regional Chamber of Commerce luncheon hosted important speakers from the Alberta Group of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) to discuss the somewhat taboo, yet highly important, issue of domestic violence in the Leduc community. Entitled ‘The Hidden Costs of Violence in Your Workplace: Be Aware, Take Action’, speakers successfully explored unexpected consequences of domestic violence, including injuries and reduced productivity in the workforce.

The main focus of the November 2 talk was to obliterate the myth that domestic violence does not happen in the Leduc community and to dissuade from the notion that is a private matter that should not be spoken about in public forum and work environments.

Later on in the month, the City of Leduc asked residents via its Facebook page what they intended to do mark National Bullying Awareness Week, which came round from November 12 – 17. Offering a $100 fun pack as the main prize, which included board games, creative Books, and gift vouchers, it invited people to come up with novel ways to speak out against bullying. The winner, Ashley Berndt, came up with a song about bullying prevention, which can be listened to on YouTube.

With December being Impaired Driver Awareness Month, the city may wish to continue its current spate of community-focused initiatives, perhaps with the help of local Print companies.
