What's Happening in Leduc, AB…

The public transit ‘C-Line’ will see an expansion thanks to GreenTRIP funding. The expanded line will make it possible for Leduc commuters to travel to work in Edmonton in an environmentally friendly way.

Costs and revenues generated by the unique service line will be shared between the two municipalities of Leduc and Edmonton.

The ‘C-Line’ is already well received with an increase from 3,000 to more than 5,000 trips taken from January 2011 to January 2013. This growth realization comes before the expansion to the line, making it logical to assume that the increased service will result in increased ridership.

The development of the line will also provide seniors and others who regularly utilize public transit with an increased number of options for transportation between Leduc and Edmonton.

An increased ridership will not only generate more revenue through higher fare volumes but could also lead advertisers to take advantage of the opportunity to reach a growing captive audience. Through use of printing services, advertising materials could be produced for display on the transit line and within transit vehicles.

In terms of funding, $3.4 million was contributed by the GreenTRIP program of the provincial government while the city of Leduc provided $1.2 million. An additional $602,700 was given by Leduc County.

At a public announcement made on March 26, Transportation Minister Ric McIvor stated that this was the type of work GreenTRIP was set up to help with.

The program provides funding for new public transit as well as expansion to services with over $1 billion committed in funds to 15 communities for transit projects.
