Classical trio to perform in Leduc

A trio of Alberta-rooted artists will perform a tribute to female composers this fall in Leduc, as world-traveled classical pianist Akiko Tominaga teams up with the strings pair the Uchida-Hoekman Duo.

The trio will perform under the name Prairie Debut, although all three members are familiar with the region. Tominaga is currently an instructor at Mt. Royal University and typically performs as part of the acclaimed Trio Lajoie. Uchida and Hoekman are principal string players in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will focus on the contributions female composers have made to the classical genre. The program will include both Romantic-era works by Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and modern Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock’s experimental work “Serpentine Paths”.

The trio’s concert will be part of the Maclab Centre’s Wednesday Mosaic Series, which aims to highlight rising musical talent in a variety of genres. Also scheduled for the series in November are performances by Latin American musician Cristian de la Luna and alt-country singer-songwriter Tim Isber, among others.

All events in the series will be live-streamed as well as being open to in-person spectators. Concerts such as this have had to adapt over recent years, adding live streams and social media to time-tested promotional strategies like flyer printing.

Prairie Debut will perform at the Maclab Centre on the evening of November 24.
