High Performance Rodeo takes place in Calgary from January 5-28. It is the city’s International Festival of the Arts and will feature theatre, music, comedy and visual art in 19 venues downtown. Ticket prices depend on the performance and the individual venues.
Some of the events taking place include Lunch VaVoom, Taking Shakespeare and the 10-minute Play Festival. Performance artist Laurie Anderson will be presenting several performances and art displays. There are also several free events taking place during High Performance Rodeo and many are pay-what-you-can. Several of these events include the Snowblower dance party, the Year of the Dragon +15 Art Parade which will take place on an elevated walkway and Only Love Knows, a performance of theatre songs.
The festival has been called ‘the largest of its kind in Western Canada’ and relies heavily on volunteers to keep it running smoothly. Calgary printing companies will have been busy printing tickets, Banners and Posters to advertise the various High Performance Rodeo events taking place during the month.
Festivals such as this are an important part of any community; they highlight performers and artists who might not get a lot of notice in the arts community, they present award-winning performers and they expose people who might not normally take part in the arts community to the range of talent that exists in their home town. They help to show the importance of all the arts to the health and wellness of a city through the arts.
