Home vegetable growers who want to give back are welcome to add their name to the list of attendees who will be finding out how they can help their neighbours in need and have fun doing so.
The Calgary Food Bank has teamed up with Greengate Garden Centre for its Grow-a-Row campaign, and both newbie gardeners and experienced green thumbs are encouraged to participate. To help kick off the program for 2026, an event where growers can obtain some seeds has been organized, and it will be held in Greengate Garden Centre’s Parking lot.
Those who would like to get involved can look for the Calgary Food Bank truck that will be rolling in for the day. They can exchange a donation of funds or non-perishable food for seeds they can grow at home. Seeds will be distributed for as long as supplies last, and may include tomatoes, carrots, onions and zucchini. Information will be distributed about the Grow-a-Row program as well, and the participants can ask questions.
Growing produce for a food pantry or other cause can be very rewarding and communities across Canada have come up with their own donation programs. Information kits for such an activity can be prepared by area Stationery printers.
The Calgary Food Bank will have a truck parked at Greengate Garden Centre on May 2nd. It will accept donations from 9:30 am until 11:30 am.
