New skateboard parks planned for city

Skateboarders in Calgary will soon have greater choice when it comes to places to practice their sport.

The city is working on finalizing its list of 10 proposed sites for new skate parks across the community. They will be of three sizes; the ‘skate spot’ will be about the size of a basketball court, while the ‘neighborhood skate park’ will be the size of a tennis court. The largest will be a ‘community skate park’ close to the size of a hockey rink. It is felt that the majority will be the latter size.

Besides the actual structure of rails and ramps, each park will also include some sort of artistic element.

Three open houses were held to gather community input over the proposed sites. Nearly 300 people turned out for each, and there were also 395 online submissions received.

Once the locations have been finalized, construction can begin. It is scheduled to start in July and will hopefully conclude in the fall.

This is part of the city’s Skateboard Amenities Strategy, which was developed in 2011. So far, $4 million has been budgeted for the project.

The opening of the parks will be a welcome event for skaters throughout the city, as they will have more areas to choose from. A banner printing company can be counted upon to provide colorful decorations for each opening ceremony.
