Reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill sites is one way that people can be more ‘green’, and recycling as much as possible can make a big difference. However, for some Calgary households, the standard-sized recycling cart simply isn’t big enough.
At least 50 such families found that even after they followed the suggestions for fitting all of their recyclables in, there still wasn’t room. They then made a request to the city for something larger.
The waste management department took note of the issue and has taken steps to help solve the problem. It is conducting a study to see if providing larger blue recycling carts is the answer.
The pilot project, dubbed “Big Blue”, is providing the plus-size bins to 200 families throughout the city. They will each have a capacity of 360 liters, instead of the standard 240 liters. They will also be much deeper and taller, but will be the same width. This will ensure that they will be compatible with the current standard pick-up equipment.
Distribution of the larger bins has already begun, and more families are being asked to join the trial. If it proves to be a success, it is expected that they will become part of the overall waste management program.
Recycling and composting can play a big part in helping to reduce the city’s impact on the environment. Businesses can do their part by asking a local Print company to use materials which can be recycled.
