Calgary hopes to test new transit services

If current plans come to fruition, Calgary could form new transit links with some of its neighbouring communities.

The plan is to have bus service from Turner Valley, Nanton, and Black Diamond come in to Okotoks, which would be connected by bus to a Calgary LRT station, such as Anderson. This could be a real boon for shoppers, commuters, seniors, and others who tend to make good use of the public transportation system.

Surveys have shown that there is a demand for this transportation alternative, and plans are for it to begin by concentrating on rush hour, with services to expand to meet demand.

The trial is expected to cost around $500,000, with funding largely provided by a provincial collaboration grant. The intent is for it to begin next fall or in the spring of 2016. It’s hoped that it will help to build a sense of community partnership, and if it’s successful, it could become very strong transit brand, similar to the GO system in Ontario.

Expanding public transit service has many benefits that go beyond convenience. It can reduce the number of cars on the road, thus lowering gridlock and pollution levels. It can also allow people who don’t drive to have an easy and economical way to get into the city. The buses used in this new system may have the additional advantage providing new space for Print advertising. Poster printing companies will be able to provide this, which may help to boost sales for the local businesses.
