Even in urban areas, it is possible for people to grow some of their own food, and an upcoming Calgary workshop will point the way to successful homesteading in the city.
Urban Farm School has organized a bootcamp-style learning opportunity for those who would like to release their inner green thumb. The learning will be spread out over two days, and the principles and techniques taught can be applied to a home, community garden or even a simple balcony pot.
The activity will explore ways of growing plants that are nutritious and tasty, and it will be a hands-on session. It will begin with a discussion of soil preparation, before addressing seed starting and overall plant cultivation. Managing a small greenhouse will be discussed, and the schedule will wrap up with an introduction to the benefits of composting. It will be focused on the growing conditions found in Calgary, and at the time of writing, spots are still available.
A gardening class or other learning session gives members of the public a chance to engage in a deep introduction to a topic they are interested in. Educational materials for such events can be ordered from a local Print shops.
This exploration of the joys of urban gardening is set to begin on March 16th. It will kick off at 9:00 am at 14111 Macleod Trail.
