The City of Swan had previously set aside $850,000 to build the Midvale Skate Park but the latest grant from Lotterywest, presented to Mayor Kevin Bailey by Police and Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts recently, will see additional features added.
Roberts said she believes the grant money will help provide a great place for casual exercise and recreation, adding:
“This will provide a brilliant facility close to home for local youth. We need all kinds of opportunities for young people to make friends and enjoy themselves."
Community attractions such as this have often featured in brochure printing that promotes local activity spots.
According to Mayor Bailey, the proposal to establish a new skate park for locals was ignited following community demand for such a facility in Midland.
As a result, the community also had a valuable input into the initial design and concept.
He said Council's $850,000 in funding was to include the skate park's construction as well as the necessary terrain and obstacles determined through consultation with community members.
Mayor Bailey said the $1m grant from Lotterywest will push the skate park to a new level and paves the way for the addition of a skate bowl and pump track.
Work on the skate park is expected to begin by the end of the year.
