Midland area workshop to transform home gardens

An area near Midland is getting set to stage a family-friendly environmental workshop, showing how tiny creatures can make a big impact.

The unique event, “Growing Micro Animals with Compost for Healthy Plants”, is part of the City of Swan council’s broader Thinking Green program. The free event plans to be a fun, hands-on workshop, aimed primarily at children aged 11-14, educating them about trees, micro animals and creating rich compost.

The workshop’s main goal is to help children understand waste differently, in that it can be used as a resource for beneficial purposes and not just rubbish to be thrown out. Thinking Green in particular plans to share sustainable practices that can benefit both households and the local environment, through teaching accessible methods for composting and encouraging biodiversity in soil.

Attendees will also have the chance to take home their own bean seedling in a biodegradable pot and observe soil microorganisms through microscopes.

As locals attend workshops like the Growing Micro Animals event, the hope is for these practices to become more widespread beyond the community. This would help further promote a culture of environmental awareness, with regenerative gardening and waste-wise living. For events like these, organisers could use flyer printing for promotion, with Flyers placed in local community centres and schools.

Growing Micro Animals with Compost for Healthy Plants will be happening Wednesday, January 14 from 9.30am to 11.00am at the Dayton Family Hub near Midland, and should prove to be a rewarding family experience.
