National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) will be holding events in Midland in July to celebrate the annual NAIDOC Week.
Visitors near the Midland Oval on Tuesday 5th July will find activities for all the family as well as stalls, entertainment, traditional aboriginal music, food and more. Entertainers include the Beat Walkers and Jahmal Ryder. The Merindas will be the main act. Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company will also be participating with a stall at the event.
The Midland Junction Art Centre on the Great Eastern Highway will be hosting an exhibition by the Community Arts Network from 4th to 8th July. The exhibition, with the title “Born on Country” will celebrate the Bush Babies theme and will include portrait photography and artwork. There will also be personal stories on display. The exhibition is honouring the last generation of the aboriginal Noongar tribe to be born on country.
NAIDOC week has been celebrated since 1972 to recognise the history and culture of those who identify themselves as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. The events will be promoted throughout Australia with the display of the NAIDOC poster which is chosen each year in a national competition. This year’s NAIDOC theme is “Songlines: The living narrative of our nation”. Poster printing is a great way to promote such events, and NAIDOC Posters are available by contacting the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in the local region.
