The park represents the first major part of Swan City's transformational development plans for the CBD's open space. Already accessible to visitors is a zone dedicated to youth that includes basketball goals, landscaping, shade sails and a climbing wall and, as well as considerable grassed space.
The open space sector of the project has been funded through the support of the local Stefanelli family, which has contributed $1 million. This is in addition to a $1.3m Lotterywest grant, according to Mayor of the City of Swan Kevin Bailey, who added:
"The generous contribution from the Stefanelli family, founders of local business group Stefanelli Nominees, was made in celebration of founding director Giovanni Stefanelli's strong connection to the Midland community since he arrived from southern Italy in 1950."
The play space for children is designed around the state's unique insects and their habitats, and it seeks to encourage curiosity, discovery and play within the natural environment. It features a toddler's corral, wetland play area, equipment for climbing, cubby houses and slide tower. Public facilities such as this have often been widely promoted via the use of community-based flyer printing campaigns.
A mural project, led by artist Fieldey and undertaken by young people in the local area, has also been underway at Weeip Park recently. All work is expected to be complete by mid-2021.
