Colourful characters complete centres art installation

Mythical bush creatures have inspired the latest addition to Midland Gate’s final art installation.

The colourful characters, known as Oscar, Buddy and Rosie, are featured in sculptures by Aboriginal artist Mandy White, who was inspired by her mother and grandmother’s stories of the playful bush creatures.

White’s latest creations are an extension of her many works with printmaking, drawing and painting and were undertaken as part of the $100 million redevelopment of Midland Gate. Development projects often use brochure printing services to showcase the finished article.

A joint partnership between DAADA Midland Hub and the shopping centre commissioned the talented artist to produce a unique art sculpture at the intersection of The Crescent and Cale Street. The sculpture Forms a permanent fixture in the centre’s new-look dining and entertainment precinct.

The work was seen as an extension of the art trail in the City of Swan and also a fitting complement for public art installations recently done by Chris Nixon and Beastman, according to Midland Gate centre manager Alison Broadbent who added:

“Mandy’s sculptures are the vibrant culmination of our redevelopment’s public art project which includes large-scale murals on The Crescent and Lloyd Street.”

The artwork represents a first for White in the area of sculpting. Examples of some of her more well-known artistic endeavours have been featured in the Danjoo – Interwoven exhibition which is being held at Midland Junction Arts Centre until April 6 to celebrate Aboriginal language, culture, and arts.
